Ναθαναήλ

Ναθαναήλ, ὁ indecl. (נְתַנְאֵל. Cp. Num 1:8; 2 Esdr [Ezra] 10:22; 1 Ch 2:14; 15:24.—In Jos., Ant. 6, 161; 20, 14 Ναθαναῆλος, ου) Nathanael, a disciple of Jesus, mentioned only in J (1:45–49; 21:2). He does not appear in the synoptic lists of the twelve apostles; hence, since antiquity, attempts have been made to identify him w. various apostles, esp. Bartholomew, as well as w. other personalities; some have given up the attempt to place him among the twelve. S. Hdb.³ exc. on J 1, end. Acc. to J 21:2 he came fr. Cana in Galilee.
